Typhoon names come from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO, 世界气象组织). In 2000, the WMO started using a new name system for typhoons. It had asked each of its 14 members in the Asia Pacific area to make a list of 10 names. Members include China, Japan and Thailand. The organization used their suggestions to make a list of 140 typhoon names.
The typhoon names come from animals, plants, places and even the food of each country. For example, Megi, a tropical storm that hit the Philippines in April, is the Korean word for catfish (鲶鱼).
Most names are repeated after a certain period. But some are never used again if a typhoon associated with the name was devastatingly (破坏性地) destructive, such as Haiyan.
