When we encounter advertisements encouraging us to save endangered animals, we usually see images of pandas, snow leopards (雪豹) or seals. Researchers from the University of Montpellier in France published a study on June 7 in PLOS Biology. They found that fish conservation efforts were biased toward the more attractive species with bright colors and graceful shapes, such as angelfish and butterfly fish.
“There is a need for us to make sure that our ‘natural’ aesthetic (审美的) biases do not turn into a bias of conservation effort,”Nicolas Mouquet, one of the paper authors, told EuroNews. “Our study highlights likely important mismatches (不匹配) between potential public support for conservation and the species most in need of this support.”
